Due to having up to 45 children in each year group, we teach the children in three mixed-aged Years 1/2 classes. In theory, there are 15 Year 1 and 15 Year 2 pupils in each of the three classes.
In Year 1, we always start the year by building on the skills the children have learnt whilst in Reception. We endeavour to make the children’s transition from the Foundation Stage into KS1 as smooth, fun and educationally stimulating as possible. The Year 2 children act as role models for the Year 1 children.
We teach the National Curriculum through engaging and child friendly topics, where the children develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in a range of ways to suit all learning styles. The subjects which we teach through topics are; Science, History, Geography, Art and Design Technology. We teach the following lessons discretely as it is not always possible to link these directly to our topics: Maths, Music, Physical Education (PE), Religious Education (RE), Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) and Handwriting. Computing is also taught discreetly, though it is used in all areas of the curriculum.

Our learning in English comes through the class story/novel. Lessons focus on developing the children’s reading, writing and speaking and listening skills, through both guided and independent activities.
Maths is taught using a ‘mastery’ approach to maths in separate year groups. To support this approach, we have daily ‘Power Maths’ lessons, where the children are taught the different areas of mathematics, together with reasoning and problem solving activities. Children are taught and encouraged to use manipulatives to support their mathematical understanding and to demonstrate this understanding pictorially and abstractly. Arithmetic and times tables are also taught.
